Welcome to The British School. We are a primary school serving the community of Wotton-under-Edge, in Gloucestershire.
Our school has an historic background, having been established in Wotton in 1835, following the model of the “British Schools” inspired by Joseph Lancaster. Of the many British Schools founded in the early 1800s, we remain the only one to have kept the original British School name. The first head teacher of the school was Sir Isaac Pitman, who developed the Pitman shorthand system still used today.
Now as one of the Gloucestershire local authority primary schools, The British School continues to serve our local community and beyond. We benefit from extensive grounds, excellent sports facilities and are based in a bright purpose built school. Our pupils receive an education in a stimulating and caring environment where all children are valued fully.
Praised by Ofsted in 2011 as outstanding or good in all areas of its provision, The British School maintains and enhances its reputation through excellent behaviour, consideration for all and striving for the very best. In recent years that has seen our football team at Wembley in the final of the English Schools Football Association competition, winning the National Science challenge at Imperial College, London and maintaining a consistently impressive academic record.
What our parents say about us:
“I honestly can’t think of any improvements, and standards are already so high in every respect that counts for the children’s education and well being.”
“I feel the school is brilliant in regards to all aspects of my child’s learning.”
“Our child goes to school smiling and comes out smiling so what goes on in between must be good. Thank you.”
